Marken is one of my favourite places to visit in Holland. The gorgeous lighthouse alone is worth the trouble – it has its own tiny beach!

Marken is situated in North Holland and was formerly and island in the Zuiderzee. It was separated from the mainland during a storm in the 13th century. A dike, built in the 1950’s, once again linked the peninsula with the mainland.

When you reach the town you can wander around its cobbled streets with its characteristic wooden houses or rent a bike and cycle to the lighthouse. Even better, take a leisurely walk there – it’s only about 2km out of town.
